This is a 1930’s original and genuine brass ships lantern made by the best French maker Ouvrard et Villars, based in St Ouen France. Ouvrard et Villars started in 1900 and made lanterns for ship and trains of the highest quality. This “Fanal” lantern is made of heavy gauge brass with bronze fittings and a heavy Fresnel lens.
The lantern has been taken apart and about three layers of paint removed taking the lamp back to its original polished brass finish. The original electric fittings are in very good condition and have been cleaned and tested and are safe to use.
The lantern is in very good condition with a few bruises and scars from normal use. The dents have purposely not been pushed out as they bear witness to the fact that this is a genuine vintage lamp and not a recent copy.
The heavy and thick glass Fresnel lens is in good condition even though there are some small chips.
A wonderful lamp to be used on your boat, boathouse, jetty or barbecue area or even as an office lamp over your desk.
Ouvrard & Villars are known for their high quality ships lanterns prized by collectors. The origins of the company Ouvrard et Villars can be traced back to 1830 when it was known as “La maison Faucon Frères”, later owned by Guichard and company, it became Ouvrard & C° at the end of the 1800’s and shortly after became Ouvrard Villars and Perez. In 1931 the company name changed to Ouvrard and Villars. In the
    1950’s the company became
    Ouvrard Villars & Guilux.
This dates the lamp between 1931 and 1950, the person from whom I bought the lamp told me that it came from a pre WW2 naval vessel, and certainly the dates would make this possible.
